What to Expect with Ductless Mini-Split Installation for HVAC | Papalia

When it comes to energy consumption, if you’re like most customers, you take an interest in products that enhance comfort, save money and limit environmental impact. What you may not realize is that one-half of your residential energy consumption is a result of your home heating and cooling. With a conventional ducted system, especially when used in unconditioned zones,  you can lose up to 30% of energy due to leakage and conduction.  Other supplemental devices such as space heaters and window AC units are even less energy efficient than the conventional ducted central air system. Moreover, space heaters are highly susceptible to fire accidents and Window AC units are susceptible to break-ins. While there is no perfect solution, because of lower operating cost, higher energy efficiency, and greater flexibility to resolve a homeowner’s energy needs, a ductless mini-split installation is fast emerging as an alternative method for home heating and cooling.

What to Expect From a Ductless Mini-Split Installation?

Ductless mini-split installation has been widely used in Europe, China, and Japan for decades. Advances in heating and cooling technologies in recent years has enhanced the operating capacity and the energy efficiency of a mini-split system. Consequently,  the system is growing in popularity in the United States.  Much like the conventional system, the mini-split system has an outdoor heat pump (or a condenser) and at least one indoor air-handling unit. The exterior unit is connected to the interior unit(s) via a refrigerant line.  The system uses the refrigerant line to transfer heat energy between the condenser and the air handling unit(s). In the summer, the heat inside your home is absorbed by the refrigerant and emitted outdoors. In the winter,  the cycle is reversed. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the outside air and transfers it to the interiors of your home. Hence, the ductless mini-split system is both a home cooling and heating device.

  • A mini-split ductless system is the best available cooling and heating system for a remodeled or an adjunct zone in the house (e.g. garage, workshop, sunroom). The installation is easier, less expensive and less invasive compared to installing a ducted central air system
  • There is very little difference in price between a ductless system and a conventional ducted system. But since the ductless systems is significantly more efficient and operate at a lower cost, the return on investment is higher for a ductless system. According to some estimates, you can save up to 40% on your energy bills by switching to a mini-split system.
  • You can control the room temperature, indoor unit’s fan speed and air direction with a remote control. You can also control a ductless mini-split indoor unit from anywhere in the world using an internet-enabled computer, tablet or a smartphone. If you’re vacationing somewhere warm in the wintertime and hear that the temperature is dropping back home, you can adjust the temperature in each room and prevent pipes from bursting, or have a warm bed ready when you come back.
  • A ductless mini-split installation allows you to compartmentalize home heating and cooling into multiple zones. Instead of having one thermostat that controls the temperature of an entire home, with the ductless split systems you can independently control the temperature in each zone. A zone could consist of one room, a couple of rooms or an entire floor of a house. You can even turn off the indoor unit in an unoccupied room and reduce your energy costs
