5 Benefits of a Whole House Humidifier in Massachusetts

  • Cooling

When it comes to keeping your home comfortable, humidity is second to temperature in importance. However, the two operate on an inverse relationship. When the temperature rises, humidity drops. You’ve likely experienced this phenomenon during the winter when you have the heat on. If you want to keep the air in your home humid, your best option is to call Papalia, which can install a whole house humidifier in Massachusetts. By installing it into your cooling and heating system, it’ll introduce water vapor into your home from the ductwork.

Here are 5 ways a whole house humidifier in Massachusetts can make your life better:

Comfort

Dry air can dry out your skin and nasal passages, which can cause irritation on your hands, elbows, and other parts of your body. A whole house humidifier helps keep you healthier and more comfortable. In addition, it can also help you sleep better at night. It’s much better to get a humidifier for your home than spend a fortune on skin lotion.

Health benefits

A similar benefit of humid air is that it can help you stay healthier. In particular, dry air can increase symptoms or attacks for those who have asthma as it dries out their respiratory system. In addition, viruses and bacteria have a hard time flourishing in the humid air.

Save on energy bills

Turning up the thermostat isn’t the only way you can make the house feel warmer. Air that can capture more moisture can maintain more heat. Because of this, humid air feels warmer at lower temperatures. Installing a humidifier can help your home feel warmer in the winter. The EPA reports that you can save 4% off your energy bill per degree you drop the thermostat.

Protect your furnishings

Dry air can wear down a lot of things you keep in your home. Wood can shrink, warp, and crack while paper becomes more brittle. Keeping the air in your home humid can help protect your belongings in the long run.

Less static electricity

Dry, cold air has a tendency to create more static electricity. A humidifier in your home can help make the air less dry and reduce the chances of being shocked.

5 Advantages of a Mini-Split System in Massachusetts

Mini-Split System in Florida by Papalia

5 Advantages of a Mini-Split System in Massachusetts

  • Cooling
  • Heating

A mini-split (or ductless) air conditioner is one that’s made up of multiple indoor units connected by conduits to an outdoor unit. As the name suggests, these don’t require ductwork, pre-existing or otherwise, to run. This can make them very useful for certain homeowners. Maybe you’re looking for an easy way to cool your home without installing ductwork? Read on to learn about how a mini-split system in Massachusetts might be right for you.

Here are 5 advantages of switching to a mini-split system in Massachusetts:

Small and easy to install

One of the more obvious advantages of a mini-split system is that it takes up less space than other systems. They don’t require ductwork, which can be nice in older buildings, and only require some small pipes and a three-inch hole in a wall to install. They’re so easy to install and non-invasive, installation could take a single day depending on the number of units installed.

Versatility

Each outdoor unit can have up to four indoor units which can have individual temperature goals. This lets you have different zones to more thoroughly control your home’s temperature.

Energy efficient

Because they don’t make use of ducts, mini-split systems are more energy efficient. Ductwork losses in central forced air systems account for more than 30% of space conditioning’s energy usage. They can lose even more if the ducts are somewhere unconditioned, like an attic. You’ll save money overall by improving your home’s temperature efficiency.

Quieter

Ductwork can cause a variety of noises from debris or leaks, like whistling and banging. With a mini-split system, a professional will remove the ducts or seal the air registers. This’ll make your temperature systems much quieter. In addition, the indoor units are quieter than other units due to their lower fan speeds.

Increased air quality

With traditional temperature systems, the ducts have to get cleaning on a regular basis. Failure to do so can result in a buildup of dust, allergens, and other nasty stuff. Even if you give them a complete cleaning, you can still leave some stuff behind. With a multi-split system, you won’t have to worry about what’s in your ducts and your home’s air will be fresher as a result.

6 Benefits of Having Papalia Tune Up Your AC

AC Tune-up by Papalia Home Services in Massachusetts.

6 Benefits of Having Papalia Tune Up Your AC

  • Cooling

As winter turns to spring and spring turns to summer, New England homeowners will be swapping out their heaters for air conditioning. But will it be ready to tackle the summer heat? The people at Papalia Home Service know that it’s a good idea to give your AC a tune-up before the warm weather moves in to make sure you’ll be ready for summer. Here are six reasons you should give it some maintenance before the summer arrives.

Benefits of an Early AC Tune-Up

Lower electricity bills.

No matter where you live in New England, summer is going to be hot. It’s likely that you’ll want to be running your AC most of the time during the summer, but that can cause a steep increase in electrical bills. It can be even worse if your AC isn’t in peak condition. A system with clogged filters and failing parts will need to work harder to do the same work. A harder-working AC will also wear itself out quicker, reducing its overall lifespan. By tuning up your AC now, you’re increasing its efficiency and lowering your utility bills.

More comfort.

What would you call an AC that can’t keep you cool? A bad one. Summers can be tough even for modern systems. If you want to your AC running at a constant cool, you’ll want our professionals at Papalia to make sure your AC is running at top performance.

Fewer breakdowns.

If you use your AC system this summer, are you certain that it won’t fail to start up? Do you know for sure that it’ll run smoothly all season? If you’re not sure, give us a call! Our tune-ups come with a complete inspection that can identify problems before they cause an actual breakdown.

Cheaper repair bills.

In the event that your AC wind up needing repairs, they’ll likely be cheaper if you’ve gotten maintenance beforehand. The reason for that is because our maintenance addresses the more costly problems (like air flow issues and broken parts) during our inspections before they cause actual breakdowns. Our inspections are also cheaper than repair jobs, so get your AC checked when you can.

Extended AC lifespan.

If you want your AC system to stay operational for a long time, you’ll want to give it regular maintenance. By routinely checking on your AC and preventing breakdowns, we can help extend your AC’s lifespan by years. Without regular maintenance, the average AC only lasts a few years as it pushes itself too hard trying to provide cool air.

Better air quality.

During the colder months where you never use your AC, various bits of dust and grime build up in it. When you turn it on, all that nasty junk is going to go into the air, which can hurt your air quality and aggravate those summer allergies. When you call Papalia to give your AC a tune-up, we’ll clean it out, ensuring that your home’s air stays fresh in the summer.

Why choose Papalia Home Service for your AC tune-up?

Papalia Home Service has around 25 years of experience dealing with plumbing, electrical, and HVAC problems for the Boston Metro West Area. In addition, we’ve been named recipients of the Angie’s List Super Service Award for three years in a row in six categories. Our top of the line AC services are just a phone call away and ready at a moment’s notice with service available every day, so give us a call to get your AC tuned-up today!

What to Expect with Ductless Mini-Split Installation for HVAC Needs

ductless mini-split installation and how it can transform your utility bill.

What to Expect with Ductless Mini-Split Installation for HVAC Needs

  • Cooling

When it comes to energy consumption, if you’re like most customers, you take an interest in products that enhance comfort, save money and limit environmental impact. What you may not realize is that one-half of your residential energy consumption is a result of your home heating and cooling. With a conventional ducted system, especially when used in unconditioned zones,  you can lose up to 30% of energy due to leakage and conduction.  Other supplemental devices such as space heaters and window AC units are even less energy efficient than the conventional ducted central air system. Moreover, space heaters are highly susceptible to fire accidents and Window AC units are susceptible to break-ins. While there is no perfect solution, because of lower operating cost, higher energy efficiency, and greater flexibility to resolve a homeowner’s energy needs, a ductless mini-split installation is fast emerging as an alternative method for home heating and cooling.

Your Comfort Is Our Number One Priority

What to Expect From a Ductless Mini-Split Installation?

Ductless mini-split installation has been widely used in Europe, China, and Japan for decades. Advances in heating and cooling technologies in recent years has enhanced the operating capacity and the energy efficiency of a mini-split system. Consequently,  the system is growing in popularity in the United States.  Much like the conventional system, the mini-split system has an outdoor heat pump (or a condenser) and at least one indoor air-handling unit. The exterior unit is connected to the interior unit(s) via a refrigerant line.  The system uses the refrigerant line to transfer heat energy between the condenser and the air handling unit(s). In the summer, the heat inside your home is absorbed by the refrigerant and emitted outdoors. In the winter,  the cycle is reversed. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the outside air and transfers it to the interiors of your home. Hence, the ductless mini-split system is both a home cooling and heating device.

  • A mini-split ductless system is the best available cooling and heating system for a remodeled or an adjunct zone in the house (e.g. garage, workshop, sunroom). The installation is easier, less expensive and less invasive compared to installing a ducted central air system.
  • There is very little difference in price between a ductless system and a conventional ducted system. But since the ductless systems is significantly more efficient and operate at a lower cost, the return on investment is higher for a ductless system. According to some estimates, you can save up to 40% on your energy bills by switching to a mini-split system.
  • You can control the room temperature, indoor unit’s fan speed and air direction with a remote control. You can also control a ductless mini-split indoor unit from anywhere in the world using an internet-enabled computer, tablet or a smartphone. If you’re vacationing somewhere warm in the wintertime and hear that the temperature is dropping back home, you can adjust the temperature in each room and prevent pipes from bursting, or have a warm bed ready when you come back.
  • A ductless mini-split installation allows you to compartmentalize home heating and cooling into multiple zones. Instead of having one thermostat that controls the temperature of an entire home, with the ductless split systems you can independently control the temperature in each zone. A zone could consist of one room, a couple of rooms or an entire floor of a house. You can even turn off the indoor unit in an unoccupied room and reduce your energy costs.

Don’t wait another day and call Papalia Plumbing and Heating to receive a free estimate on a full system installation.

How to Assess if a Ductless Mini Split Installation is Right for You

ductless mini split installation and if it is right for your home.

How to Assess if a Ductless Mini Split Installation is Right for You

  • Cooling

When it comes to heating or cooling a home, most people rely on ducts to transport temperature-controlled air to different areas of the home. However, there are alternative methods, such as ductless mini split installation, which could actually be more energy efficient and effective for your home setup. A ductless mini split is a heating and cooling system that works similarly to traditional central air but without the ducts. Much like the standard method, ductless mini splits function through an indoor air-handling unit and an outdoor compressor or condenser. With central air, air temperature is regulated in the indoor unit and transported to each room through ducts. In a ductless mini split, the indoor unit is located in the room it is heating or cooling. It is connected to the outdoor unit through a conduit which runs through the walls, comprised of refrigerant tubing, power cables, condensate drain, and suction tubing.

With this heating and cooling method, you will see cost savings over time. Those with ductless heating and cooling even often receive homeowner’s rebates because the system is environmentally friendly. To cater to your home’s specific needs, multiple indoor units can connect to the outdoor unit, so you can install more than one filter in a room, or Instant Knockout use them in several locations throughout your home. Ductless mini split installation offers flexibility — they can be mounted in several locations, including floors, walls, and ceilings of your preference. These systems are sleek in design and often offer remote controls so you can customize the temperature in each room. Some can even be programmed on a timed schedule or to only turn on when there are people in the room. Without a proper consideration of your heating and cooling needs, you could rule out mini ductless splits, a practical and cost-effective heating and cooling method that could be most beneficial to your living situation.

Why a Ductless Mini Split May Be Right for You

Your space is not suitable for duct work: Some areas are too , which may warrant a ductless mini split. When installing, professionals only need a small hole (approximately 3 inches) to run the conduit through, making it ideal for installation in these tight areas.

You have a small space that needs to be heated or cooled: Since a ductless mini split only distributes air to the room it is in, it is most efficient in a small space. However, you can still install more than one in a larger space to achieve more heating and cooling power.

You’ve added a room onto your home: If you’re adding on to a structure that doesn’t have a traditional ducted heating or cooling system, ductless mini split installation could be the best option. Because they’re easy to install and energy efficient, ductless mini-splits could be a practical solution to your heating and cooling needs.

You are currently using a radiant heating system, space heaters or hydronic heat: Certain methods of heating are not effective in distributing heat throughout all spaces in the home. If you a ductless mini-split may be a good option to heat certain areas of the home that aren’t heated enough through your current heating source.

You want to save money on heating and cooling: Ductless mini split installation costs more than traditional heating, but you’ll reap the cost-saving benefits in the long run. With duct heating and cooling, energy loss can be up to 30 percent as

You want to closely manage room temperature: Unlike other heating and cooling methods, ductless mini split installation allows you to specifically adjust the temperature in each room. Some come with convenient remote controls, timer settings, and settings so the system only turns on when the room is occupied.

You must make some considerations, however, before choosing ductless mini split installation. Although the long-term cost of heating and cooling with a ductless mini split is less than other systems, the installation costs more than other methods of heating and cooling, so if you cannot afford the initial cost, a mini-duct split may not be for you. Mini duct splits also require regular cleaning to maintain efficiency and air quality. Like all other systems of heating and cooling, ductless mini splits . If it is not properly installed in the first place, it could not be effective in heating and cooling rooms to your desire.

Ductless Systems and The Benefits

ductless systems for your home and its benefits

Ductless Systems and The Benefits

  • Cooling

Ductless air conditioning has evolved to become one of the most effective solutions to cooling your home. It is compact and energy efficient, with a design that gives flexible installation. Ductless systems can either cool a single room or zone without the use of air ducts. For older homes without ductwork or smaller homes where ductwork is hard to insert, ductless is a great solution. That is why Papalia has decided to explain how ductless air conditioning works and the benefits associated with it.

What does Papalia Know About Ductless Systems?

At Papalia Plumbing and Heating, we know how important it is to have a warm or cool home depending the season, and have the proper installation that is ready for it. Living in the northeast can be tough since we never know what kind of weather to expect. That is why we always push for ductless heating or air conditioning, due to its cost-effective and efficient services. We have the right people who can install these systems for you, with exceptional knowledge and understanding of what exactly works for your home. With well-trained professionals, ready to solve the toughest of problems, here at Papalia we care about our customers. High-quality service is our game and we never shy away from it, which is why you can trust us to get the job done right.

How Does Ductless Work?

Ductless systems consist of two components, an outdoor condenser unit, and an indoor air-handling unit. The indoor air handling units are usually located high up and mounted on a wall. Both types of units, however, are connected by thin copper refrigerant tubing, as well as electrical lines that run through your walls. Ductless systems work in a constant cycle. In terms of air conditioning systems, they work by using refrigerant cooling to transfer heat from indoors to outdoors. It takes the heat from inside your home and converts it to cool air, which comes back into the home through the air handling unit. A lot of ductless systems are reversible, meaning they can either provide cooling or heating depending on the season.

Where Can I Install a Ductless System?

What is great about ductless mini-split systems is the number of configurations. For additional heating capabilities, mini-splits can be reversed into a heat pump. A single zone unit can heat a single room or zone within your home, while multi-units can take care of different areas. The flexibility of these systems is impeccable. Outdoor condensers must be connected to indoor condenser units, however. Ceiling cassettes are extremely helpful in situations where space is limited. Fan coils are suited in the ceiling and generate air through the exposed grill. Wall units are another form of ductless that are highly efficient. This device allows temperature adjustments, allowing homeowners the option of either cooling a specific room or area within a home or heating it. This gives you the opportunity to have complete control over your system. Ductless is especially helpful when adding a new room in your home as well. A lot of the time, a home’s existing cooling/heating systems will not be comprehensive with other added rooms. That is why installing ductless systems can become such a benefit in creating a comfortable environment for your family.

The Benefits of Ductless Systems

There are so many benefits associated with ductless systems, whether they’re used for cooling or heating. One bonus from installing these systems is that ductless mini-split systems do not require ductwork. And when you decide to go away from ductwork, the efficiency of your home increases. No ductwork means you lose less than 5% cooling compared to regular ductwork where you might be losing up to 40%. That is based on traditional central cooling systems with ductwork. That is why ductless makes such a difference for your home and your utility bill. Some ductless models have the highest efficiency ratings versus any other type of air conditioning or heating system. And since ductless units are mounted high up on the wall and away from windows, they provide you with improved security and an unobstructed view. For those of you who use air conditioning units in your home, you understand the pains of installation and air conditioning and losing your window for an entire summer. And once the cold weather hits, the best part about some ductless models is that you can use them for heating, too. One last bonus when installing ductless systems; they’re practically silent. This is because the noisy compressor and condenser are located outside of your home.
